La Cusinga EcoLodge

Pacific Coast of Costa Rica

Description La Cusinga Lodge is located in an ultra-tropical, virgin rainforest with monkeys and toucans, and surrounded by a pristine coast, secluded beaches, and lively reefs. The lodge is named after the Fiery-billed Aracari, which can be seen in the area and it is called locally Cusinga (female) and Cusingo (male). This bird is in the toucan family.

The rainforest-surrounded beach near La Cusinga, called "Playa de Arco" is part of Ballena (Whale) Marine National Park , created to protect its various coastal marine habitats, also endangered species like the Pacific hawksbill turtles that live and nest here, and the humpback whales that visit the park every year from both Northern and Southern hemispheres.

Our electricity comes from the stream we swim in and the sun. We also grow lots of fresh local organic food that we collect daily.

In addition, we are actively involved in marine and terrestrial conservation and environmental education. We encourage and support local culture and people as much as possible.

We gladly help make arrangements for exploring Caņo Island, mangroves , dolphins & whale watching when possible , horseback riding , sea kayaking, deep sea fishing, scuba diving, and Corcovado National Park, which are all close by.

We enjoy sharing the richness and magic of La Cusinga with others and sincerely believe the enjoyment, education, and overall cost/benefit for visitors is as good as it gets anywhere in the World.

Environmental / Ocean Ethics:

For 30+ years we have been actively involve in our communities at a personal level; our families where the first colonizer of the area. We still remember the great stories that our grandfather told us about his first visits to the area. Over the years we have worked hard to preserve, not only our land, but our communities. Our father has been a player in the creation of Cano Island National Park , in the ongoing efforts to preserve Coco Island National Park , and a key player in the creation of Ballena marine National Park ( First Marine Park in Central America ). He was named honorary member for life of the National Parks Systems, by President Calderon for all his contributions and time to the Parks.

For more than 25 years we have worked in reforestation projects, which over the years have becomes models of study by national and international organizations. When the government was given incentives to plant foreign species, our father was planting native species. He played with different techniques that have improved the rate of growth, and the success rate of germination.

Our family has been active in the communities, from donating Christmas presents to all the children in the local schools for 20+ years, to being members of the local organizations, to creating National Parks.
